remove my carriage returns

i have a xml w/four carriage returns and for some reason this is preventing
me from executing my xpath queries. What is the best way to remove these?

Why, what exactly are you trying, how exactly does the XML input look?

I changed the processor line from:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
to
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

and now no problems.

If the CRs are in character data content, maybe use the
normalize-space() function in your comparison.
