Suggestions on securing web services.

UJ
I've got a web service that is going to run on an SSL connection and I don't
need it to be really tight security. But I'm wondering about doing a
userid/password as part of the parameters and wondering if that's a good
idea. This is for a public page so I don't want to use Windows Auth. or
something like that.

What do people typically do.

TIA - Jeff.
