Proxy timeout ignored when URL not available

I call a web service from a .NET CF application (Pocket PC). My problem
occurs if the URL is not found, because I am not connected to the correct
network. It takes 50 seconds before it returns to my application, giving a
Web exception ("The remote name could not be resolved"). I need to reduce
this timeout.

I tried setting Timeout in my web service proxy to 10000, but this has no
effect. It still takes 50 seconds. Documentation says that Timeout is
supported by the .NET Compact Framework.

Why does this not work and how can I reduce the timout here?

Server: .NET framework 1.1.4322
HP iPAQ Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Ed. 4.21.1088
