Profile & properties element

I have an app that defines a simple profile property. Here's the <profile>
element:

<profile >
<properties>
<add name="firstName" type="System.String" allowAnonymous="true"/>
</properties>
</profile>
The app seems to work just fine, I cannot even access
Profile.firstName.Also, Visual Studio highlights the add element and says I
have the following error:

"The element 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/.bla bla bla:properties' cannot
contain child element 'http://blablabla:add' because the parent element's
content model is empty."

If I try to add another <add> element, Intellisense says the only thing I
can add in the <properties> element is <!-- or <?. And if I delete the whole
thing and try to retype it, the <properties> element automatically gets a
self-closing end (eg, <properties/>)
