Software Failover

Does anyone have any recommendations or links for creating a relatively
simple active/passive failover scheme for (.Net) Windows services? I'm
investigating adding this functionality to our midtiers, but I'm having
trouble finding information about how others have accomplished this or
the problems others they've had.

The goal is to have multiple servers available to process requests, but
I need to ensure that exactly 1 server is active at any time. Only the
active instance should accept client requests. As an instance becomes
active it would log its host name to the database or another central
server so clients would know where to find the active instance.

I'm sure others have tackled this situation.
