Plugin for Java Serialization in Dot Net or Vice versa

Hi,

I have a client windows application (VB.Net) interacting with a server that
has been coded in java. I basically need to pass a java object from the
server into a binary format over the network and get it as a response back at
the client which I then want to deserialize into an object.
However, a java serialized object cannot be deserialized into a .Net object.

My query:
Is there any plugin I can use at the client end (java plugin to operate in a
dot net environment) that can be used to deserialize the java binary
formatted stream? Or else, is there a dot net plugin I can use at the java
server to serialize a java object into a stream that is recognisable by the
dot net deserialize method when the response comes back to the client?

I' would really appreciate any pointers that I may get.

Another thought...

I could also probably write a web service that I could call from my server
that would return me the .Net serialized stream.

Any thoughts?

Yes, this kind of thing is exactly the reason web services were
invented. You wouldn't pass in a serialized stream though - the web
service layers themselves deal with how your objects are serialized.

Yes, this kind of thing is exactly the reason web services were
invented. You wouldn't pass in a serialized stream though - the web
service layers themselves deal with how your objects are serialized.

But talking about the other approach, is there any existing interop assembly
that I could use at my client end as well?
Something that would deserialize in the java format and then pass me the
base string or object?

I don't know of any, I'm afraid, although I wouldn't be surprised if
there were some. I'd be slightly surprised if they worked well though
