activex substitute in .net??

I have an application that I need to write, this app will control a piece of
hardware connected via comm port on the client pc. I would like this app to
be web based because of what will be done with the data generated. This will
be on an intranet so security is not an issue. I can do it using activex
controls but what alternatives exist in the .net world for such an app?

Thanks
Mike

I'm a little unclear why you feel that it should be a web application if it
will always run on the intranet. Even if you code a Windows application,
keep in mind that you can easily communicate the data over TCP/IP, and
writing it as a windows app sidesteps a lot of hassle with the limited
security permissions of a web application.

I want it as a web app although it is not necessary as you said, and harder
to do in a browser. The main application will be based on the web in asp or
asp.net. This portion(maybe 10%) of the code will be the only part that
involves clientside hardware. I thought it would be a nicer interface if
everything is in one place.
