Classes & Viewstate

I have written a collection that generates user
information, ie username, password. When used in a Win
environment the class works perfectly well, it is only
when i attempt to use the class in a web environment i
start getting problems.

On the load the collection is populated from the database
and subsequently a drop down list is loaded from a further
button click. I am using 'If Not IsPostBack' and therefore
on the button click all data to be lost.

I am now in the situation where i am contemplating writing
variants to the class to get around this problem. I would
like for the collection variables to be stored (to Persist
until a new form is loaded) so that i only connect once to
the database.

Surely there is a standard way of achieving this, any help
will be greatly received.

Thanks
