How to Assemblies held in GAC access their associated config files

Hi,
I am developing a set of assemblies which will be shared by many
applications and so I intended to place them in the GAC at runtime.
However, these assemblies have associated configuration files that
they load. The config files arespecific to the assemblies, not the
consuming applications.
My question is this - what is the recommended approach to enable the
assemblies to 'find' their config files at runtime? Obviously, the
config files cannot be placed in the GAC, but they are not specific to
the consuming application, so I don't want to use the application
config file to point to them. Neither do I want to place multiple
copies of the config files in a subdirectory of each application that
uses the associated assembly.
The alternative is not to place the assemblies in the gac and update
each applic config file to point to the directory holding the
assembly, but again this means having a codebase entry for every
assembly the applic uses.

Any suggestions?
thanks
