Corrupted .NET Framework

After installing the IE SP2 upgrade in late August, I attempted to install
the .NET Framework security patches recommed by the Microsoft Upgrade site.

I get all types of error messages, basically saying that I can't uninstall
the existing versions or upgrade to the newer version. Microsoft support
engineers have been sending me utility files, looking at my hard drive files,
etc. without success since early September. The latest suggestion is to
completely uninstall Windows XP by restoring the OEM version that came with
the Dell machine.

I'm not an expert, and therefore expect some difficulties with losing
information, creating new problems, etc. The basic question: Can I live
with the corrupted version of .NET Framework since I'm not an advanced
programmer and never utilize .NET Framework (as far as I know)?

Regards,

Whether you're an advanced programmer or not has little to do with your use
of the .NET Framework. Visual Studio .NET applications *do* use classes in
the .NET Framework, with a very small list of exceptions. So unless you are
restricting yourself to C++ console programs from an empty project, or to
certain other C++ templates, you need to get your .NET Framework issues
straightened out.
