setting authentication type

When using the webclient class in the following manner:

dim myWebClient as WebClient = New WebClient
myWebClient.Credentials = New NetworkCredential("user", "pass")
bytReturn = myWebClient.UploadData(strURL, bytRequest)

How does the authentication type get set? (for example basic vs. integrated
or digest)
