scrolling marquee text in label

I've written a custom controll that scrolls text (marquee style) one
character at a time. This works - but is too jerky looking. I'd like to make
a smoother-scrolling marquee. I think the way to do this is to turn the text
into a bitmap, and scroll that. Are there any examples of doing this or
anything similar? Thanks
