Bad .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1?

In spite of trying various ways of loading .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
under my new WinXP Service pack 1, I was unable to get it to install.
Typically, the installation would hang after a minute or two of execution.

After many hours of frustration, I called Microsoft tech support and
discussed the issue with them. After asking around, the support person said
there indeed was a bug in the installation file, and to forget about it
until they put out a new release, one which will definitely NOT be called
Service Pack 1 anymore (hmmmm, 1a?).

This was during the afternoon of Sep 10, but as of that evening, there was
no word of this problem on their website.

Incidentally, after the install failed via Windows Update (the new version)
and my Win XP Service Pack 1, I downloaded the installation file from their
website and tried it directly (figuring I would avoid any firewall problems
that way). It still hung. Even the Cancel hung. So did the system shutdown!

Anyone else got more info on this?

Hi Don,

I had the same exact experience. First from WindowsUpdate, then from
download.
Only difference is that I'm installing on a WinXP SP2. Thus, XP SP2 is not
the issue here. The issue is some noob worker publishing untested beta crap
as final versions. And I dont know any workarround.

Shame on you Microsoft!!!
They know there is a serious problem and do nothing about it. Dont even make
public a warning for people to stop trying.

Whoops, I meant to say Windows XP Service pack 2 rather than Windows XP
Service Pack 1.

Service Pack 1 was for the subject of this posting - .NET Framework 1.1
