killing a thread

gfx
hi ppl,
i am new to threads in .net. i have couple of doubts ...

scene - i have an application where a socket is reading a
data in a while loop.
# i want to kill that thread on a click of a button.
# I also want to free all the memory used by the thread.
# can i destroy a socket if it doesnt reads for a certain
amount of time ??
i tried using
thread::abort(); and thread::dispose(); bu they didnt seem
to work for me.
