MailMessage To/Cc/Bcc Property Question

The documentation for the To, Cc and Bcc properties of the MailMessage class includes the following remark

"Recipients in the semicolon-delimited list can be either email addresses or address book display names.

I thought the reciepient(s) had to be SMTP addresses and that there was no connection to any address book for name resolution. Can someone clarify what is being inferred by the "or address book display names" portion

Thanks
