DLL version conflicts

Hello newsgroup,
I have created a component based software that loads and uses DLLs.
Therefore I have created a base class in C++ that every object is
derived from.
In order to access the DLL I get the address of a function that returns
a pointer to the base class. After that I am using the functions of the
base class.

This all works in a nice way.

For a few weeks now I am using as a new compiler the Visual Studio.NET
IDE. I have recompiled every component and the main application and
everything still works. The problem is however when mixing up
application compiled in .NET with DLL objects compiled with Visual
Studio 6.0. In that case I am getting strange return values from the
component access functions.

My question: How can I create the DLL so that it will run propperly with
any kind of application compiled with any version of Visual Studio? Is
it a matter of the used runtime libraries?

Best regards,
Hauke
