You CAN use multiple languages, but there is no NEED to do that!

I have a basic type of question....What is .Net? I am a student and have
been wondering what is it? I have used Visual Studio .Net, and only i got
from it is that its one application in which we can develop in all
languages..but does that mean that half of our project is in VC while other
half in VB. I dont know...Please help me....
