Windows XP application group icon

when multiple similar forms are opened up, windows xp can group them into an
application group button on the start bar.

Unfortunately, this application group uses the icon of the application's
executable, and not the icon that has been specified by form.

I am hoping that someone knows a handy way to set the icon used by
application groups (without changing the application's icon), either using
interop or some esoteric .net wizardry that i've been unable to find.

Failing that, i am hoping that someone knows a way to prevent multiple forms
from being grouped in the start bar, but on an application basis instead of
going into the start bar properties and setting it there. If this can be
accomplished by interop or .net wizardry i'd love to hear of it also.

However I am not very sure if this resolves your problem
or not.... still I am just posting you my observation.

That's very right that Windows XP groups multiple windows
and the group icon is set to the Application's icon.

For this you can set the application's icon from the
project properties to an appropriate icon and then this
new icon will be shown as the group icon for individual
forms of your application.

Also remember this Application icon will be set to group
icon only in case of release mode. In debug mode, the
same out-of-date icon will appear.

If you won't find anything better - try SetClassLong API function.
SetClassLong(YourForm.Handle,GCL_HICON, DesiredIcon.Handle)
and/or
SetClassLong(YourForm.Handle,GCL_HICONSM, DesiredIcon.Handle)

I have a configuration file i'm using to "theme" my application. I want
everyone to be able to configure the app to look how they want it to, so i
need runtime (not compile-time) options. a super-hero named max showed me a
nifty interop function i can try. I'll post the results shortly!
