.NET Custom Wizard Template directives

Part of the documention on the .NET custom wizard templates directives
states that: "Note The syntax above is new to Visual C++ .NET.
Syntax from previous versions of Visual C++ is supported in Visual C++
..NET."

However, I have found that this statement is appears to be wrong. I
have tried using the old syntax (example: $$IF or $$BEGINLOOP) and it
does not get parsed whatsoever.

Why was the syntax changed? The new syntax buys absolutely nothing
over the old syntax.

If anyone has found a way to get it to work then please let me know.
Otherwise I might be stuck writing my own converter as I have written
many wizard for VC++ 6.0
