Trapping mouse down

Hello-
I have a form with a few controls on it. I want to be able to stop the
left mouse down message from being sent to the controls at times.

From the main form I trap the mouse down messages in the WndProc
method. I thought that if i returned on mouse down the message would
not be passed to the control, but that doesnt seem to be true. How can
I achieve this? thanks

switch(msg.WParam.ToInt32())
{
case WM_LBUTTONDOWN:
if(readOnly)
{
return;
}
Console.Error.WriteLine("The WM_LBUTTONDOWN
message was received.");
break;
}

base.WndProc(ref msg);
