Cannot update web reference (web service)

I have a web service created and have been using it without
any problem. Couple of days ago, when I tried to update
the web reference, the VS 2003 hangs for about a minute (I
think it goes to waiting mode until time-out), then a
message box titled "Microsoft Development Environment"
comes up with a message "The operation could not be completed".

Has anybody encountered this kind of problem and found any
solution for this?
