Number of Windows 98 Systems With .NET

Where can I find statistics about how many Windows 98
systems have .NET installed? I need this information to
direct development and testing efforts.

I don't know of anyone that has such data.
There is no way to know, short of conducting a broad survey.
and that has not been done, to my knowledge.

Surely someone must have done it. It's basic information
about the industry that Microsoft and other companies are
interested in.

Why would MSFT do this considering the lifecycle of Windows98 which ends this year.

Willy.

It's not perfect but one way to gather this information would be to track
hits to your web site. The "User-Agent" data in the HTTP header has the
version of Windows as well as the version(s) of the framework installed on
the machine making the request.

They might do this because in order to write an
application, one has to decide how much effort to devote
to Windows 98 development. There are some aspects of
the .NET framework that, at least according to the
documentation, depend on which OS the framework is running
under. Apparently the thing to do is to devote zero
effort to Windows 98 and hope that you don't lose too many
users. That is what I am planning to do, after attempting
to investigate both the differences and the number of .NET
Windows 98 users.

That is not a bad idea and it's certainly by far the most
helpful thing I've heard here in this regard. Thanks.
