scrolling through records and requesting the next junk of records from the db

Hi,

I am doing a VB.NET application with SQL Server 2000 and I need to implement
a database search facility that will normally return lots of records. Those
records will then be displayed in a datagrid.
What I want to do is not to create a complete dataset but a partial one, and
whenever i reach the end of the partial dataset i want the database to
return the next part of the dataset.

My first guess would be to create a client cursor and fill it up with say a
100 records. The 100 records are then displayed on the datagrid (and the
vertical scroll bars appear on the datagrid). Attempting to scroll the
datagrid beyond the last (or first) record will generate a db request for
the next 100 records and so on....

The application i am working on is not a web app.

Is this the correct approach to the problem? if yes, how do i define such
cursors on SQLServer2000 ?

Thanks
