Smart Card Reader

I have the following scenario.
1. I have a client-server application.
2. The server is running a service application.
3. The client sends and receives information to the
service application running on the server.
4. Each client machine is connected to a security card
reader (Active Card Gold). The user must insert the card
even before logging on to windows.

Here is what we want to accomplish.
1. When the user logs on to windows they must first insert
the card.
2. When the client application mentioned above sends or
requests information from the server running the service
application, we want the application on the server to be
able to validate the client with the credentials supplied
by the card reader when the user logged into windows.
3. The client is written in visual basic 6.0. This piece
does not necessarily have to be written in vb6 so long as
it can be used with it.

Are there any articles which describe in detail how to
accomplish what I am asking.

Thanks,

Billy Jacobs
