Image set to aspx file getting called twice w/ smart nav on

I have an imageurl of an image (a larger image) set to an aspx file which
does a Response.OutputStream. The url includes a query string. When the page
is loaded this aspx file for this large image is called once. The page also
has separate image buttons which are thumb images (there image url is set to
a specific picture file). If the user clicks the image button it posts back
to the server and changes the query string on the larger image (among many
other things) so that the proper image is loaded with the proper scalling. I
have noticed in this case the aspx file that displays the larger image is
called twice. I have smart navigation turned on for the page. If I turn
smart navigation off it only requests the file once. Seems kind of backwards
to me. Anyone know why this happens. Thanks for any insight.
