SOA - new paradigm or snake-oil ?

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) - a great new paradigm, or just
this years marketing snake-oil for middleware vendors ?

Now don't get me wrong, integration of loosely coupled web-services
across applications and organisations to achieve higher level business
objectives may well be a good thing, but is this really anything new ?
Or is this just distributed computing with new terminology and words to
describe old concepts ?
Thanks,
Andy Mackie.

The real question is, do you need it, and does it do want you need it to?

If the answer to both is "yes" then it doesn't really matter, they could
call it "snake poo".
