Software copyright protection

Hi

In order to protect (old tune) and restrict the use of a sofware, I'd like
to ask some questions.

First : is the "serial number" read in ->"Configuration Pane" -> "System"
(like 55639-OEM-00yyyyy-xxxx) unique, protected by the OS (not or hardly
"changeable" by user) ?
Second : is it a good idea to use it as a key to tie a softwear number to a
particular computer ?
Third : How to retrieve such a number in C or C++ (or C.NET if easier), is
it foundable in key registry, or..?
Many thanks
