The downgrade to VC 6.0 is still available. If you email me (munge my
posting alias in the obvious way) with date and who you spoke to when you
were given the wrong information and with your location, I'll make sure
these folks get informed and I'll get you a contact where you can request a
downgrade.
Sorry for the misinformation you got.

I recently spoke with MS about option #2. This appears to be no longer an
available route because MS is no longer producing copies of VC6. The best
secondary market that we've found has been eBay.
It is becoming pretty difficult to find this software as a stand alone
product. Good luck.

IIUC, you have three choices:
1. Look in the secondary market - some retailers might still have unsold
copies of VC6.
2. Buy Visual Studio .NET 2003 and then request a "downgrade" from
Microsoft.
3. Buy an MSDN subscription, which still contains VC6 in addition to VS
2002 and 2003 and 2005 Beta.
