Stop compiling doesn't stop compiling

Sometimes I use CTRL-BREAK to stop a build. In VS6 this worked great. In
VS7.1/c++/.net/2003 this doesn't always work so great.

Sometimes after I stop the build, something still thinks the build is going.
I know this because when I right-click one of my .cpp files in the "Solution
Explorer" the "Compile..." menu entry is disabled.

How can I prevent this from happening?
