DLL called from Visual Basic

I need to call a DLL I have created from a Visual Basic program. If I compile the VB program and execute it, the DLL is loaded succesfully and everything works. If I try to run the program in the VB development enviroment, the DLL is not found. I have put copies of the DLL in the working project directory, windows system and system32 directories.

If I call LoadLibrary to try to determine the problem, it returns an error code of 1, which is not listed in the possible return values. Interestingly, it still returns this error in the compiled project, even though the DLL can be succesfully loaded by the implicit calls to its functions.

I am at a loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
