GCHandle / Delegate Design Guidelines

Greetings

I am writing some MC++ code to interoperate between a legacy C-languiage dll and C#. I need to specify a callback function to the managed portion for the dll to provide more detailed error reporting. The dll is an embedded database. Since this is error information that may occur at any time, the managed callback needs to be pined for a prolonged period of time. Are there any guidelines on how long a GCHandle or delegate can be pinned? I understand pinning disrupts the efficiency of the GC. I expect this managed callback to be available for the lifetime of the application.

All of the examples on MSDN and interop texts show examples of delegates or GCHandles used for relatively brief periods of time (length of a function call). Is the scenario I described above an expected use of pinning, or is there another way to approach the problem that I am not considering?

Thanks in advance.
