compiler and linker problems

I am running Visual C++ 6.0 intro. offer on windows XP. My compiler works sometimes and my linker doesn't work at all. It starts to compile and/or link just stays there. It does nothing. It either says compiling... or linking...
Then nothing. Any ideas????
