"Terminate it in an unusual way" error message from non-.NET app

One of our customers reported a strange problem with our app, running on
Win2003 Server:

We have two VC++6 (classic C++) .exe's that talk to each other - an MFC app
talking to a COM server. Somewhere during startup, the GUI app dies with an
error message from "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library":

Runtime Error!

Program:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way.

All the references to this message I can find seem to refer to the .NET
runtime. Is that where this message comes from? How could that be? Is it
because the COM system is now a .NET app or something?

TIA,
