Serializing a class derived from a generic collection

I've got some xml I want to look like this

<FRED att1="jim">
<BERT ..... />
<BERT ..... />
</FRED>

I've struggled to do this with a class like

class FRED
{
public List<BERT> BERT;
[XmlAttributeAttribute]
public string att1;
}

beacause I guess I don't quite get how to override the array parts.

So what I've done is

class FRED : List<BERT>
{
[XmlAttributeAttribute]
public string att1;
}

which serialises the classs and internal array as I want, but won't
serialize teh attribute.

What should I do?
