Attributes on an ArrayItem

I am trying to serialize something in the format:

<groups>
<group attr1="" attr2="">VALUE</group>
<group attr1="" attr2="">VALUE</group>
<group attr1="" attr2="">VALUE</group>
</groups>

I am able to get a format like"

<groups>
<group attr1="1234" attr2="2" />
</groups>

using the code:

[XmlArray("groups")]
[XmlArrayItem("group",typeof(Group))]

with the attributes declared inside of the Group class.

How can I set the VALUE of the group element?

I have also tried making the XmlAttrayItem of type String and I can
set the VALUE but cannot add the attributes.

Any help would appreciated.

Josh, you're already part of the way there with the XmlArray and XmlArrayItem attributes. I suppose your
GroupArray class might look something like this,

public class GroupArray
{
[XmlArray( "groups")]
[XmlArrayItem( "group", typeof( Group))]
public Group[ ] m_groups;
}

The only problem remaining (and it's not a very difficult one) is laying out the attributes on the Group class. I
suppose what you're looking for would be something like this,

public class Group
{
[XmlAttribute( "attr1")]
public int m_attr1;

[XmlAttribute( "attr2")]
public DateTime m_attr2;

// . . .

[XmlText( )]
public string m_value;
}

The key is the XmlTextAttribute; it presumes that m_value (what you want serialized in the VALUE placeholder in
your example) really is simple content and can be serialized as text. Owing to the fact it is simple content, only a
single field may be marked as XmlText in the Group class.
