Using XML as a Datasource for Select Web Control (without Dataset)

I have an XML document that contains the base data for many of the
ListBox in a web form. I want to submit a sub-nodelist as a
datasource for each of the List Box, but how do I do it without using
the dataset ?

Here is the code that I think should work

// code
xmlDocument d ;
d.LoadXml("<root><states><state><value>AL</value><text>Alabama</text></state><state><value>AK</value><text>Alaska</text></state></states></root>");

workState.DataSource=d.SelectNodes("/root/states/*");
workState.DataValueField="[\"value\"].InnerText" ;
workState.DataTextField="[\"text\"].InnerText" ;
workState.DataBind();
// end of code

This result in an error saying that DataBinder.Eval:
'System.Xml.XmlElement' does not contain a property with the name
["value"].InnerText" . But if I put
workState.DataValueField="InnerText" ; it works but return the content
of both items of the state in one string.

I have seen many solutions to this problem by converting the xml to a
dataset first but this does seem like an additional step.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
