WebRequest and SSL

Can the webrequest object work with an SSL (https://) connection?

Dim webReq As WebRequest
Dim netCred As NetworkCredential
netCred = New NetworkCredential("USERNAME", "PASSWORD")
webReq.PreAuthenticate = True
webReq.Credentials = netCred

I Guess this may not work
Have a look at msdn site
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.net.networkcredential.aspx
after Remarks para

NetworkCredential
"This class does not support public key-based authentication methods such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) client authentication."

If there is any alternative Please let me know
I too have similar need

Thanks and Regards
