fieldnameSpecified

According to the XML Serialization documentation
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en...asp?frame=true)
, fieldnameSpecified can be used to minOccurs = "0" a variable when it is serialized.

For example;

Public Z As Decimal

<System.Xml.Serialization.XmlIgnoreAttribute()> _
Public ZSpecified As Boolean

QUOTE: "The XmlSerializer sets and checks this special field to determine
whether a value has been set for the field or property."

The behavior I have observed is that regardless of whether or not a value is assigned to the variable (Z), the only way to get it
serialized is to explicitly set fieldnameSpecified (ZSpecified) to True.

Does anyone know if this is the expected behavior?

I think that's expected. Moreover that's documented:
"The XmlSerializer sets and checks this special field to determine whether a
value has been set for the field or property." When you set ZSpecified to
True, XmlSerializer understands Z is specified. When deserializing,
XmlSerializer sets ZSpecified with regard to whether Z is specified in XMl or not.

Thanks. It didn't occur to me that 'sets' might refer to deserialization.
