User identity in Class File

Hi - I'm using VS.Net 2003 with ASP.Net 1.1

I'm trying to keep all my database calls within a data access layer.
Including logging in via NTLM or Forms.

In a normal aspx.vb page, I can check if the user is using Windows or
Forms by:

If User.Identity.AuthenticationType = "NTLM" Then
...Windows
Else
...Forms
End If

But If I try that in my class file, it doesn't recognise it.

Is there anyway of checking this in a class file (what imports do I need
at the top of my page?)
