Visual Studio .NET 2003 install help

Everytime I try and install it it says that I do not have the prerequisites
to install .NET. So I click to install the prerequisites and it says

"Setup has detected that another program requires the computer to reboot.
You must reboot the computer before installing Visual Studio .NET
Prerequisites. Once the system reboots you need to restart setup. Click OK to
reboot."

After I reboot I run the setup again and it does the same thing and asks me
to reboot again. So I tried putting in the prerequisites CD and it says

"Insert the Visual Studio .NET CD1 to install prerequisites"

Any ideas? I have WinXP Pro and all updates.

Hi Alan, I just installed vs .net 2003 a couple of weeks ago....

I vaguely remember thinking that I would have to install the prerequisites
first. This didn't work and so instead I started with cd 1, which then asked
for the prerequisites to be installed. Typically cds then prompt for the next
in the series. But not the prerequisites. When I re-started, I had to
re-insert cd 1 and then continued through cd2 and so forth...

.... that's if I remember it correctly

I don't know the answer but I suspect it matters a lot if there's stuff from
previous installs still hanging about, especially bits of old dotnet
frameworks. Did you follow the instructions for uninstalling stuff and if so
are you sure they are all gone?

Second I think you can install from the prerequisites disk, using the other
CD first is to avoid installing unnecessary stuff I reckon.

I'm not sure about this, had no problems myself on about 3 machines and XP
and 2003 so I can't claim any knowledge, just suggestions where to look.
FWIW I have both 2003.net and the 2005 beta running on one system and
haven't yet hit trouble but that may be because I'm lucky or else I don't
use the potentially problematic bits :)

You should delete all keys called PendingFileRenameOperations in the registry, but BE CAREFULL with registry operations.

Also keep in mind that you did not do any install actions after last startup.

You can find this on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Se ssion Manager

To be sure empty all the items also under CurrentControlSet and all other locations.
