Xml document from xslt parameter

In xslt is it possible to create an xml document reference based on an
input parameter? This doesn't work :

<xsl:param name="SomeXml" />

<xsl:variable name="XmlDoc" select="document($SomeXml)/root"/>

Is there another way of doing this?
