XML VS SQL and ASP

TS
Please bear with me, I'm a little confused and I don't know if I'm asking my
question in the right place. Till recently, I used to use vb6, ADO and SQL to
develop windows applications. I started to upgrade my knowledge to vb.net and
learned a little about ASP.net in order for me to start developing web based
solutions. Then my agency was offering some trainings and I heard that some
XML is useful in the web development world. Now I'm familiar with XML, but
then some people informed me in one of the newsgroups that ASP.net as a
front-end and SQL as a back-end are enough tools for web development. Can
someone tell me when in my case XML can become useful? If I can use ASP.net,
ADO and SQL for web development, so what is the use of XML, XML Schema,
XSL.....?
