security problems when working through walkthrough examples

I am a vb6 developer trying to learn asp.net using the walkthrough examples.
I followed the instructions on "Using SQL Server in Web Applications" to
switch to integrated secutity and then found that I could not get the example
"Accessing an XML Web Service Using Visual Basic or Visual C#" to work -
until I undid my changes to security.

It is very frustrating trying to learn a new paradigm and troubleshoot
security issues at the same time. Can anyone give me some advice about what
to do and what not to do with regard to avoiding security problems when doing
the walkthroughs?
