setting headers in socket programming

Hi all
I have written httpwebrequest/httpwebresponse using the same where i can
add the headers and get the response as stream which inturn is .xml. in
this program i request our proxy server , add the headers then get the
response as .xml. now i am trying the same for using socket. here i could
able to connect the socket and getting the default header information. i
want to set my own headers and request the header. if i use receive method
of socket i am getting whatever i send in send method. i want the response
should be xml file.how can i get this. is there any method to do this.
please help me out.
