Help on Database access advise ???

Dear all,

We have some old application which collect data from different source and
store those data in an access 97 database. I will cal those type of
application "OLD APP"
Those OLD APP are deployed already for long to our worldwilde customers, so
we cann not change anything on those.

Actually we are developing a totally new application under VB.NET which will
be in charge of doing som data analysis from OLD APP.

In order to perform that goal my .NET application need to connect to that
running access97 database of OLD APP and read diffeerent tables information.

The risk I am afraid of if is the locking situation on which OLD APP is
accessing a its own table and then the :NET application is also accessing the
same table.

The big point is that I should not crash my OLD APP running when collecting
database data from my .NET app.

For that I have 2 scenarios :

1 - I connect to this remote access database table using dataset with
disconnected mode as Read Only, and retrive needed information

2 - I copy the remote access97 database from my old application to my local
..NET application and do the job I need to do.

Ideally for me the scenario1 would be better but do you see a risk of
conflic situation on table ?

thanks for your reply
Regards

Serge
