Accessing SQL Database

TS
I am very new to .Net. I have good experience with VB, but I'm still in an
early stage of learning .Net plattform. Anyway, I don't know if I'm asking
this in the correct newsgroup, but if I'm not, please direct me to the
correct one.

My problem is: I am trying to connect to a SQL database from Visual Studio
2003, I noticed that under the tool menu there is a Connect To Database
option. I clicked on this option and specified the database I want to connect
to (I have admin role to the SQL server and db owner rights to the database),
but I got an error message:
"It is only possible to connect to SQL Server Desktop engine databases and
MS Access databases with this version of Visual Studio"
Does this mean that I am using the wrong Visual Studio version to perform
this? What do I need to do to connect to the SQL database? Shall I go ahead
and configure an OLEDB driver for SQL on the machine and use ADO to connect
to that database? Or there is another way to do that from Visual Studio?

Please advise

It sounds as if you have the VB standard version. That error just
means that you will not be able to use the wizards to connect to the
database. You can still use ADO.Net to connect to SQL server through
code.

A better group to ask questions of this sort is:
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.aspnet

It's possible you have Visual Studio Pro instead of Enterprise. You need
Enterprise to admin your SQL Server from VS IDE. I ran into that myself
actually. :< I know your pain. But if you're doing dev on your own, then
you can probably easily wheel your chair over to your sql box anyways. :>

Good luck.
