Windows Service Thread debugging

Hi,

I have written a windows service that performs
several checks when it starts on a worker thread. Should
the checks fail I stop the service. The problem is the I
get an exception "Failed to stop service." and the
service stays in memory. What I'm really after is how I
can track down what is causing the service to stay
alive. Does anybody know how I can find the problem?

Many thanks

Steve.
