General question on Web portal application development using .NET

Hi all,

I am currently developing GIS web portal application based on Opensource
technology called Jetspeed from apache but as our company do develop GIS
application using Microsoft technology as well in the past, I just wonder
what sort of software and framework is needed for developing microsoft based
portal application. We have experience with the old ASP, VB, ADO and IIS
based project in the past but yet to get involve with .NET technology and
PORTAL. So If you guy on this list could provide some information on
developing Microsoft portal application start from what edition of Windows,
IIS we required and .NET IDE (with what language VB.NET or C#) as well as if
sharepoint portal server is what it name suggest. Please give the list of
software and framework that we required as this would be greatly appreciated.
I beleive something like mymsn is based on Microsoft latest framework

Go take a look at Rainbow, DotNetNuke or the starter kits at www.asp.net.
Everything you require is OpenSource, the .NET SDK is a free download and
the down, load page tells you the pre-requisites for running .net apps.

Hi bhiyavudh,

I'm a GIS developer and I'm working with the same solution listed in your post: GIS application based on Opensource technology (JetSpeed) - http://www.dotnet247.com/247referenc...58/292275.aspx

I was trying to solve a problem with jetspeed installation and found your message, which content was about the use of microsoft portal technology taking the place of open source portals.

I didnt try microsoft portal application or microsoft framework. Just java based framework (ANT, MAVEN, TOMCAT) and java based portals (JETSPEED, LIFERAY AND JPORTA).

JetSpeed was better then others in my review. So I tried it.

But my GIS tool is Intergraph based, thus I need microsoft technology (.NET) to run applications.

I just want to know if you solved this question with microsoft or open source technology. Which products you used? SharePoint? JetSpeed?

What kind the GIS technology you used? Esri? Intergraph too? Other?

Could you help me, please?

Regards
