I searched for several days in google and msdn and never saw anyone
else with this problem, so in case anyone else runs into this, I'm
documenting what happened - if anyone knows why, I'd be happy to know.
For several days I tried to install VS.net 2003 on my home Windows 2k
Pro machine. I've installed VS.net at work before, so I know how it
should go. After copying the files to the temp directory, the install
would just hang on the message box saying components were being check.
I shut down Zone Alarm and Norton Anti-virus, but still no go. I
checked the log file but no errors were there. I finally used RegMon
from Sysinternals to try and see if there was a registry problem and
saw it stopping after checking some network entries. That's when I
noticed the network icon in the tray lighting up with constant packets
being sent and recieved. I have a small home network with another W2k
Pro machine, a Win XP machine (not powered on at this time), and an
old W95 machine with my printer and kids games.
I used another utility (Network Probe I think it's called) and saw the
packets going back and forth to the Win95 machine. Once I powered the
Win95 machine off, the install worked just fine.
Why would the Win95 machine cause this to happen?? I've never had a
problem like this before - what would setup be checking for on that
machine?
