USB talk in VB.NET

I have a device that is converted, via the cable, form serial to USB. It is not a market product yet. I need to uniquely identify the device within the System information and figure out how to return information such as location and functionallity. I am somewhat new to programming and could use a point in the right direction. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank You.
